The legendary conductor and artistic director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic is leaving when his contract expires in 20-26. That’s when Gustavo Dudamel heads to the New York Philharmonic.
The unexpected news comes shortly after the Venezuelan-born conductor celebrated his 42nd birthday in Paris, where he currently serves as musical director of the Paris Opera. Dudamel calls the decision extremely complex and difficult and that his heart remain in Los Angeles.
He still has three seasons remaining with the L.A. Phil.
The superstar maestro is a fixture in Los Angeles, but also as a celebrity conductor and is a good friend of the film composing legend John Williams.
