7.8-MAGNITUDE QUAKE IN TURKEY NEAR SYRIA KILLS AT LEAST 3K, THOUSANDS MORE INJURED

The death toll in Turkey and Syria could rise eight-fold, according to the World Health Organization.
The latest numbers from the earthquake – 3,700 dead, 17,000 injured.
The number of those displaced even higher.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the the 7.8-magnitude quake is one of the largest ever recorded in Turkey.
Survivors say it took 2-minutes for the shaking to stop.
About 12-hours later, more than 100-kilometres away, there was a second quake nearly as strong with a magnitude of 7.5.
An official with Turkey’s disaster management authority says more than 6,000 have already been rescued across 10 provinces.
More than 20 countries are sending experts and aid to help rescue efforts.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canada’s ready to provide assistance.
Turkey lies in one of the most active earthquake zones in the world.
In 1999, a tremor took more than 17,000 lives.
The country’s worst earthquake ever was in 1939 when 33,000 died.
One Turkish woman says living where she does means she’s used to ”being shaken,” but that today’s was ”the first time we have ever experienced anything like that,” she adds.
”We thought it was the apocalypse.”
