After receiving the support of the majority of party members, Marit Stiles has been elected as the new leader of the Ontario NDP.
There was just one candidate for the position of leader, Stiles, a New Democrat who has served in the provincial legislature since 2018.
The official opposition leader in the legislature was confirmed by the party during a leadership vote held at a gathering in downtown Toronto Saturday.
Stiles represents the Toronto riding of Davenport, served for years as the party’s education critic, and has previously been a school trustee and president of the federal NDP.
Stiles has said that her focus after being elected leader will be on defeating Progressive Conservative Premier Doug Ford in the next provincial election, which is expected to take place in 2026.
Since former leader Andrea Horwath announced her resignation on the evening of the June provincial elections, longtime New Democrat Peter Tabuns has served as the interim leader.
