CANADIAN FILMMAKERS DO WELL AT OSCAR NOMINATIONS

Sarah Polley’s movie “Women Talking” has received a best picture Oscar nomination.

The Toronto filmmaker tweeted the announcement caught her off guard, as she had scheduled a routine doctor appointment during Tuesday’s nomination announcements.

Polley also received her second best adapted screenplay nod for the film based on Manitoba author Miriam Toews  2018 novel of the same name.

Her first was the 2007 feature  ”Away From Her” about a woman with Alzheimers.

Domee Shi’s  ”Turning Red” is competing in the best animated feature category.

Among the other Canadian projects nominated are the animated short  “The Flying Sailor”  Calgary-based animators Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis.

James Cameron “Avatar: The Way of Water” among the filmmakers of the 10 best-picture nominees.
