Hospital nurses in Ontario say the province’s plan to expand procedures at private clinics means hospitals will have to do more to retain professionals.

The Ontario Nurses’ Association is preparing for bargaining late this month for members who work in hospitals, and the interim president says there will be some big asks in order to ensure nurses remain in those facilities.

Bernie Robinson is not revealing specific proposals the ONA will make at the bargaining table, but says she’ll push for improved policies on vacation, workloads and work-life balance,  staff recruitment and retention.

Robinson says nurses need to see better shift premiums as well as higher pay to compensate for the rising cost of living in addition to three years of limited wage increases under Bill 124.

Critics are concerned that hospitals will see further staffing crunches if nurses choose to work at clinics that offer 9-5 shifts instead of overnights and weekends.
