Toronto is now under a Winter Storm Watch, as forecasters with Environment Canada provide a more definitive timeline for this intense weather event.

As the system moves in later on Thursday, it will begin with rain, heavy at times overnight into Friday. Then as the temperature dips from 3 degrees above zero to minus 9 Friday afternoon, a flash freeze is expected Friday morning creating icy conditions as the precipitation changes to snow and blowing snow with wind gusts of 90 to 100 km/hr. Damaging winds and snow and blowing snow continue into Saturday, Christmas Eve Day.

Because of those damaging winds, staff at Hydro One are getting ready to send out crews to repair downed hydro wires.

They’re also urging customers to prepare for an extended power outage by ensuring emergency kits are stocked.

Toronto’s director of Transportation Operations and Maintenance says crews are ready to tackle the coming winter storm.

Vince Sferrazza gave an update for thing on Friday and explained the most difficult period of this dangerous weather event will be Friday when there is a flash freeze and rainy surfaces turn icy.

“The ice is going to be very challenging for us because we need to get that opportunity to put some salt down so that roads don’t become extremely dangerous,” Sferrazza detailed, “That’s why we are parking equipment at various strategic locations across the city so we can get there quickly.”

As for how air travel will be affected, staff at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport have cautioned the storm could affect operations.

This event in southern Ontario follows days of heavy snow and extreme cold in Vancouver that severely impaired airport operations, prompting the airport to halt all incoming international arrivals until tomorrow morning so congestion on the tarmac could be cleared.
