It is a special time for Jewish people, as Chanukah is marked here in the GTA and around the world.
The 8 day festival of lights began Monday evening at sundown, as acknowledged by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in a recorded message on Twitter.
“This is a time for family and friends to come together and tell the story of the Maccabees and to practice traditions that have been around for generation, traditions like frying latkes and eating sufganiyot, singing songs and spinning dreidels, lighting the candles of the menorah for 8 nights,” Trudeau said as part of his message.
The prime minister also spoke to the antisemitism Jewish people face here in Canada and worldwide.
In Washington, U.S. President Joe Biden plans to condemn growing antisemitism in remarks for a Chanukah reception Monday evening at the White House, which will include a menorah lighting and blessing.
A statement from the White House says the Democratic president will tell guests at the event that silence is complicity and will add that it’s imperative that hate, violence and antisemitism are condemned.
