While Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health says influenza has peaked in the province, that’s not the case for the city of Toronto.

The city’s associate medical officer of health Dr. Vinita Dubey says flu season here may not peak for a few more weeks.

“I think it’s also important to note that right now, we’re seeing the flu strains that are circulating, and just because we’re hitting ouR peak with those strains, usually there’s a second bump in February or March,” says Dr. Dubey.

Earlier, the province’s chief medical officer says while hospitalizations are down for all respiratory illnesses, Dr. Kieran Moore added that RSV will persist, putting pressure in the healthcare system.

Respiratory illnesses have overwhelmed children’s hospitals with the flu accounting for most of the admissions at many of the country’s pediatric hospitals. It’s forced many to cancel surgeries to redeploy staff to help out intensive care units and emergency departments.

As for COVID-19, Dr. Moore says hospitalizations are down but he expects an increase in COVID cases in the New year.
