The prestigious Turner Prize has been awarded to artist Veronica Ryan for her work creating mysterious and evocative sculptures out of materials including fruits, seeds, and volcanic ash.
At a ceremony in Liverpool, England on Wednesday night, the 25,000 pound ($41,000 CAD) prize was given to the British artist who was born in Montserrat.
Ryan was honoured for her work on public sculptures created in London to recognize the contribution of Caribbean immigrants to Britain after World War II.
At 66, Ryan is the oldest artist ever to win the prize, and said it was “better late than never.”
The award, named for 19th-century landscape painter J.M.W. Turner, was established in 1984 and has helped establish the careers of artists including Grayson Perry, Damien Hirst, and Steve McQueen.
