The federal government in introducing new legislation aimed at improving the country’s early learning and childcare system.

Passed into law, it would mean the creation of more spaces that the provinces and territories agreed to through funding agreements.

Karina Gould, Families, Children and Social Development Minister, tabled Bill C-35, also known as the “Canada Early Learning and Child Care Act.”

The 2021 federal budget pledged $30 billion in new spending on the national childcare system over five years, with another $9.2 billion annually after that.

In her announcement, she noted that the Liberals previously had a program in place under the Paul Martin Liberal government, but it was later dismantled by Stephen Harper’s Conservative government.

With the House of Commons soon to adjourn for the Holidays, it’s unlikely the legislation will advance before the new year.
