Doug Ford says Bill 39 does not trample on democracy despite the new powers given to Mayor John Tory that would allow him to pass bills with one-third support.
“The Mayor has to have the authority to direct staff and hire seniors levels of staff,” Ford told reporters in Brampton. “So now as he’s held accountable for everything that goes on in the city, he has to have the authority to make moves, it’s like running a large corporation and the CEO, he can’t make any decisions.”
But a majority of Toronto city councillors are calling on the province to reconsider the ‘Better Governance Act.’
In their letter to the Premier, they argue council should be governed by majority rule.
The legislation has the backing of John Tory who has said that he will always try to reach a consensus with council and would only use his veto on matters of citywide importance.
