More than 50,000 education workers in Ontario will begin casting ballots Thursday to decide whether they support a provisional agreement that their union and the provincial government reached over the weekend.

According to the Canadian Union of Public Employees, the typical employee will receive an annual rise of $1.00 per hour, or nearly 3.59%, under the four-year deal.

The pact, according to Laura Walton, head of CUPE’s Ontario School Board Council of Unions, is unfavourable because it lacks additional staffing level assurances.

Votes for ratification are scheduled to begin Thursday and run through December 5th.

The results of the vote will be made public the following day, on December 6th, according to CUPE.

The parties could reconvene at the table and CUPE could issue another strike notice, if the settlement is rejected by the union’s members.
