When Canada’s men soccer team takes to the pitch Wednesday in the World Cup for the first time since 1986, Alphonso Davies will be in the starting lineup against Belgium; a 2018 semi-finalist.
Coach John Herdman says the star winger’s fully fit after recovering from a strained hamstring that’s sidelined him since November 5.
Only 22, Davies is already considered by many to be the best Canadian soccer player of all time.
”It’s a dream come true, I think, for me, the players, the country,” adds Herdman, who coached the Canadian women to bronze medals in the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, then switched to the men’s team in 2018.
”We want to put Canada on the map,” says 39-year-old team captain Atiba Hutchinson, the only Canadian player who was alive at the time of the country’s last World Cup match.
