Toronto author Sheila Heti has won this year’s Governor General’s Literary Award for fiction for her novel “Pure Colour.”

The 45-year old write takes home the $25,000 prize for what’s described as a strange and meditative book about love and grief in a pre-apocalyptic time.

“Pure Colour” was longlisted for this year’s Scotiabank Giller Prize.

This year’s Governor General’s prize for non-fiction went to London, Ontario’s Eli Baxter for “Aki-Wayn-Zih: A Person as Worthy as the Earth.”

The Governor General’s Awards were founded in 1936 and are among the country’s oldest literary honours.
