According to the United States Navy, warships from the U.S., Canada, Japan, and Australia are conducting extensive joint exercises in Japanese and international waters.
The 7th Fleet says the two-week biennial “Keen Sword” exercises include scenarios designed to “challenge the critical capabilities required to support Japan’s defence and the stability of the Indo-Pacific region.”
Growing Chinese assertiveness is viewed as the region’s primary military challenge by the United States and its allies.
The drills also coincide with the Group of 20 leaders’ meeting in Indonesia, among other high-profile regional forums.
The G20 summit provided the opportunity for the first face-to-face meeting between U.S. President Joe Biden and China’s President Xi Jinping since Biden took office.
Amid this, Xi has expressed dissatisfaction with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over media reports on their communications.
During a second meeting on Wednesday at the G20 summit in Indonesia, Xi complained about apparent leaks to the media.
Xi claims their conversation the day before was mischaracterized, undermining their relationship.
Trudeau responded that while Canada and China disagree on some issues, they can work together constructively on others.
Trudeau’s office said he’d raised concerns with Xi about Chinese interference in Canada.
