COVID-19 cases spiked in select American schools that lifted mask mandate according to a new study in New England Journal of Medicine.

It finds select Boston-area school districts that lifted mask mandates earlier this year experienced nearly half as many cases of COVID-19 per 1,000 students and staff than school districts that kept their mandates in place.

The researchers say the results support universal masking as an important strategy for reducing COVID-19 incidence in schools and loss of in-person school days.

Amid growing pressure to mandate masks, Mayor John Tory says he listens to this city’s top doctor.

“Any decision to broaden or do anything else with regards to masks will come based on advice I get from the Medical Officer of Health Dr. de Villa, I relied on her advice throughout the pandemic and we handled it very successfully here in Toronto and I will continue to rely on her advice.”

Despite calls to reinstate mask mandates in some indoor settings,  Toronto’s medical officer of health says she does not feel that is necessary just yet.

Meantime, Ontario’s Medical Officer of health says he’s looking at the data before recommending a return to masks.
