Negotiators for Ontario’s CUPE education workers say they plan to limit their comments to the media while mediated bargaining continues, and they are calling on Premier Doug Ford to do the same.

CUPE leaders say their only focus is negotiating a collective agreement that meets the needs of students, parents and the education workers themselves.

While talks continue behind the scenes, the premier continues to defend his government’s use of the Constitution’s Notwithstanding Clause in back-to-work legislation passed last week.

“But do you know what’s even worse than Section 33?” Ford ranted to reporters, “is threatening to go on strike, shut down the economy of Ontario, keep parents at home, keep the kids at home, keep the grandparents as they’re getting unloaded at the grandparents’ house. That’s so much more dangerous than Section 33.”

Negotiations resumed on Tuesday.

Doug Ford promised to repeal legislation that imposed a contract on CUPE workers if union leaders agreed to end their walkout which they did.

CUPE leaders are asking Ford to repeal the legislation this week rather than wait until his plan to do so on Monday.
