The union for more than 2,000 bus drivers, station attendants, and other staff members has announced that its members will walk out on Monday.

Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1587 claims that the impending strike is the result of 81% of members voting against a contract proposal from employer Metrolinx.

According to the union, talks between the parties started in April, and since June 1st, employees have been working without a contract.

According to union president Rob Cormier, the union’s main concerns with regard to employing contract workers from outside companies are job security and job safety.

According to him, the union is still committed to meeting with Metrolinx to negotiate a settlement that takes into account their concerns.

GO Transit operates within the Greater Golden Horseshoe region.
