Over two million trees have been planted along the Highway of Heroes honouring Canada’s fallen soldiers.
“Trees for Life” founder Mark Cullen says the tree campaign began as a tribute in 2015 and says he’s overwhelmed they reached the milestone.
“One highway, 170 kilometers, 2.5 million trees, a tree for every hero,” said Cullen.
The campaign was inspired by the hundreds of Canadians who stood along the 401 in 2002 to salute the fallen military members who served in the war in Afghanistan as they were driven down the 170-km route from CFB Trenton to the coroner’s office in Toronto.
Since then, the route has been named Highway of Heroes.
Cullen says the tree campaign has been supported by government and the private sector.
