Toronto ranks number one, but it’s not an enviable category.
Toronto has more rats than any other Canadian city.
According to pest control company Orkin Canada’s new study, Toronto’s rodent problem is partly due to pandemic lockdowns, resulting in rats migrating to residential neighbourhoods to find food sources.
Among the other top ‘rattiest’ cities within the GTA: Mississauga, Scarborough, North York, Etobicoke, Brampton and Oshawa.
Although Alberta’s two major cities, Edmonton and Calgary, made the top 10, their rodent population doesn’t include rats, because of the province’s renowned rat-control program that’s been in place since the ’50s.
The report warns that as cooler weather approaches in Ontario, rodents will go looking for warmth and shelter.
Some tips to prevent rats from your property; seal cracks or holes in your foundation, install weather stripping around windows and doors.
Also, keep shrubs at least a metre away from exterior walls of your home and keep garbage and old food away from your house in tight fitting lids.
