Canada’s chief public health officer says she’s preparing for “worst-case scenario” COVID variants.
Dr. Theresa Tam adds there are early signs of a fall resurgence of the virus and the Public Health Agency of Canada’s keeping an eye on the virus’s evolution. She adds the way they’re mutating appears to be changing as more people develop immunity to the virus and that’s putting pressure on the virus to find ways to survive.
“There’s a very distinct immune escape where vaccines don’t work, or treatments don’t work and they cause severe illness, that’s the worst case scenario but we haven’t detected one of those yet but we need to be prepared for the potential,” said Dr. Tam.
She says as of early October, only about 18 % of eligible Canadians were up-to-date on their COVID vaccinations.
