Canada’s Competition Bureau says it’s just not clear whether any disposable wipes can be flushed down the toilet.
Single-use wipes are the bane of municipal sewer systems, causing expensive clogs and backups and resulting in many class action lawsuits against their manufacturers.
Not all such wipes are marketed as flushable, but Friends of the Earth Canada says it has scientific evidence that shows no disposable wipes can be safely flushed.
Three years ago it asked the Competition Bureau to investigate the makers of 20 “flushable” wipes for false advertising.
The bureau stopped its investigation earlier this year because it says there just isn’t one single standard to define what it really means to be flushable.
