US President Joe Biden has granted pardons for all federal convictions of simple possession of marijuana. He’s also urging all governors to do the same for state offenses.
In a tweet, the President says there are thousands of people who were previously convicted of simple possession who may be denied employment, housing, or educational opportunities as a result. And the pardon will remove this burden.
He says no one should be in a federal prison, state prison or local jail solely for possessing marijuana
Biden says classifying marijuana at the same level of heroin makes no sense.
Thursday’s announcement stops short of decriminalizing marijuana, but it’s seen as a step toward ending criminal charges for possession of marijuana.
