CNN’s first chief anchor, Bernie Shaw, has died at the age of 82.

He was a former Marine, who joined the network when it started and is best remembered for his live reportage from Bagdad during the first gulf war in 1991.

Also being mourned is Anne Garrels.

She was an international correspondent for National Public Radio in the U.S.  She reported from the front lines of major conflicts around the world, including the American “shock and awe” bombing of Baghdad in 2003.

Anne Garrels died Wednesday of lung cancer at the age of 71.
