Mikhail Gorbachev has died at 91.

 

The last leader of the Soviet Union won the 1990 Nobel Peace Prize for his role in ending the Cold War and spent his later years received accolades and awards from all around the world.

But he was widely despised at home.

In his memoirs, he said he was frustrated that in a country with immense natural resources, tens of millions were living in poverty.

The Central Clinical Hospital said in a statement that Gorbachev died after a long illness.  “Mikhail Sergeevich Gorbachev died this evening after a severe and prolonged illness,” said the Central Clinical Hospital.
