A Nebraska man has ‘squashed’ a record for travelling 61km down the Missouri River this week to celebrate his 60th birthday. But Duane Hansen didn’t use a boat. This vegetable grower climbed inside a 846 pound pumpkin name Berta.

“The boats leave the waves and you’ve got to stop everything and just hold on and ride with those waves,” Duane told a Nebraska news outlet. “That was bad.”

His sister flew in from San Diego to handle  paperwork required to make the attempt Guinness compliant.

Duane grew the giant gourd in his garden and had been trying to grow a pumpkin that big for nearly a decade.
