A Ford Escort RS Turbo Series driven by the late Princess Diana pulled in an amazing US$851,000 — or $1.1 million Canadian — at an auction held at Great Britain’s Silverstone racing circuit on Saturday, which is also home to the Formula One British Grand Prix.
The Princess of Wales’ last Ford Escort had less than 25,000 miles on it, or about 40,000 kilometres. She owned the vehicle between 1985 and 1988.
The princess was often seen driving the car around Chelsea and Kensington.
The winning bidder has not yet been revealed publicly.
The RS Turbo Series 1 was usually made in white but the royal family police guard asked for Diana’s to be painted black “for discretion.”
It’s been 25 years since Diana died at the age of 36 when a limousine in which she was a passenger crashed in a Paris tunnel as it attempted to get away from paparazzi giving chase on motorcycles.
