It’s come to light there was a potential for a breakthrough with protesters involved in the anti-mandate occupation around Parliament Hill this past winter.

Newly released documents say on the night before the Trudeau Liberals invoked the Emergencies Act on February 14th to deal with so-called Freedom Convoy occupiers, there were unsuccessful talks with protesters led principally by the City of Ottawa.

And according to a statement released yesterday by the office of Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino, it was the failure of these talks that was a factor in the government’s unprecedented decision to invoke the Emergencies Act less than 24 hours later.

The revelation comes from meeting minutes and agendas submitted last week in Federal Court, where lawyers for civil liberties groups are challenging how the federal government used the emergencies law to give police and banks extraordinary powers to quash protests against COVID-19 health measures.
