The president of the Ontario Nurses Association says nursing shortages in hospitals are so bad, the number of hospitals in Ontario that are partially closed has risen to 25.
Cathryn Hoy also told The Morning Zoom with Sam and Jane, it’s absolutely going to get worse.
“The shortages are so bad and after this long weekend with further bed, ER and labour and delivery closures, I think you’re going to see more nurses leave the profession,” Hoy explained.
Hoy says if the Ford PCs took nurses out of Bill 124, which allows for just one percent annual raises for public sector workers, it might start to help nurses feel more valued.
“I do have a meeting coming up with Queen’s Park. I’m just waiting for a date. I have no expectations because I haven’t been given any information. And as far as the health minister, I had an introduction meeting with her, about 5 minutes, and there’s been nothing more,” Hoy further detailed.
So far, Health Minister Sylvia Jones has released just a short statement saying the staffing challenges Ontario is facing in the province’s hospitals are not different from what’s happening in hospitals around the world.
