A new cohort of the youngest Ontario residents is now eligible to get a first COVID-19 vaccine dose.
Parents may book an appointment for children as young as 6 months of age on the provincial portal or through various health units, some primary care physicians, and pharmacies.
Infectious disease specialist Dr. Dale Kalina says this is good news for our province.
“We’ve seen a lot of jurisdictions across Canada, particularly in Alberta, who’ve already opened availability for childhood vaccines and of course around the world, particularly in the United States,” Dr. Kalina told CP24, “So being able to vaccinate kids between 6 months and 5 years of age is going to be great because it allows individuals to start their vaccine experience with everything from tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis and measles mumps and rubella but also COVID.”
Clinics for those in the youngest age group are scheduled to ramp up across Ontario in the coming days and some are planning to host appointments Thursday.
A statement from Toronto Public Health says they expect to start administering shots to babies and toddlers Thursday and some pharmacies are also in position to begin vaccinations.
Health Canada approved Moderna’s pediatric shot this month and Ontario’s health minister Sylvia Jones says the vaccine is safe, effective and will help protect children from the virus.
