John Tory has some competition in his third bid to be Toronto’s mayor.

According to the Toronto Star, prominent urbanist Gil Penalosa is set to enter Toronto’s mayoral race.

He’s far from a household name, but Penalosa will arguably become the most prominent challenger to two-term incumbent John Tory.

65 year old Penalosa says he’s running in part because no high profile left wing candidate has emerged and the problems Toronto is facing around issues like housing and climate change are so urgent the city can’t afford 4 more years of the status quo.

Meantime, Denzil Minnan-Wong is reflecting on the state of Toronto City Council, a day after announcing he will not be running for re-election in the October 24th election.

“We’ve lost our way in terms of having authentic genuine and meaningful consultation,” Minnan-Wong told CBC Radio, “We’re not listening to our residents and there are thousands and thousands of people who live in stable residential neighbourhoods and their voice matters, their voice counts.”

Denzil Minnan-Wong first became a Toronto city councillor in 1998.
