She was the “Red Headed Ball of Fire,” a headliner on both coasts of the United States, who began performing at the age of 14.

5′ 1″ ball of fire Betty Rowland, known for her languid, balletic style, starred in the racy variety shows’ glory years in the ’30s, ’40s and well into the 50’s.

Her costumes were elegant.  She favoured long skirts with a side slit to the hip and after a slow burn, would shed most of her gear; but, like most burlesque stars, she never got completely naked.

Betty Rowland has died at an assisted-living home in Culver City, California at the age of 106.
