As Pride weekend continues in Toronto, a newly-installed Toronto city councillor has resigned after some of her old social media posts, which appear to show homophobic content, came to light.
Rosemarie Bryan was appointed by city council as the new councillor for Ward 1 – Etobicoke North during a special meeting Friday, filling the vacancy left by Michael Ford, who is now the PC MPP for York-South-Weston.
Shortly after Bryan was appointed, the social media posts in question surfaced, prompting several councillors to post on social media that had they known about Bryan’s posts, they would not have voted for her to fill the seat.
Mayor John Tory has also weighed in saying in a statement that Rosemarie Bryan’s online posts are not acceptable for a Toronto City Councillor and her resignation is appropriate.
As for Bryan herself, she has issued a statement, which does not include an apology for her past online posts. She does say she does not want to make anyone in our city feel like they are not loved and part of our community. She says she’s committed to her religious beliefs and community work in Etobicoke.
