As Prime Minister Justin Trudeau continues his visit to Rwanda, meetings officially get underway for the Commonwealth Heads of Government in the capital Kigali.

The PM’s Friday schedule will see him sit down with the chair of the African Union Commission, as well as the leaders of Antigua and Barbuda, Ghana and Zambia.

Prince Charles opened the 26th meeting of Commonwealth leaders Friday, by urging them to learn from Canada’s indigenous reconciliation efforts as a way of learning from the past.

“In Canada recently, my wife and I were deeply touched to meet many of those engaged in the ongoing process of reconciliation. Indigenous and non-indigenous peoples reflecting honestly and openly in one of the darkest aspects of history,” Charles detailed, “As challenging as that conversation can be, people across Canada are approaching it with courage and unwavering commitment.”

On the sidelines of the summit Thursday, Prime Minister Trudeau explained to reporters the themes the 54 Commonwealth leaders are discussing.

“From climate change to the outcomes of the pandemic, but also the destabilization that Russia’s illegal and illegitimate war in Ukraine is causing on economies, supply chains, inflationary pressures both at home and around the world, but also pressures on fuel and specifically on food,” Trudeau said.

The prime minister also announced $250-million in new funding for the World Food Program.

He explained that’s on top of roughly $500-million that Canada has already donated since January to help address food insecurity in the developing world.
