A tale of two lovers separated in North Korea has won Ontario’s top literary prize.

Toronto-based poet and filmmaker Ann Shin has been named winner of year’s Trillium Book Award for “The Last Exiles.”  Her research also led to both a book and a movie about human rights abuses north of Korea’s demilitarized zone.  The film is called “The Defector.”

The 54-year old artist receives $20,000 for Trillium’s main book prize, which recognizes literary excellence across genres.

The publisher of the winning book receives $2,500 to promote the title.
