Canada’s COVID Alert app will soon be discontinued according to a government source.

Criticized as being ineffective and not living up to expectations, the app was launched in the summer of 2020 and billed as a way to alert Canadians if they’ve been in close contact with someone who’s been infected without collecting personal data.

It cost $20M with the majority of that spent on promotion and advertising.

Many provinces have replaced P-C-R testing with rapid testing, so the user keys needed for the app are not being given out.

COVID Alert has been downloaded just 6,893,423 times and only 57,704 one-time keys to report infection have been used.

Canada has seen 3.87 million COVID-19 infections and 41,000 related deaths since the pandemic began.
