Vladimir Putin’s Russian forces have seized half of the eastern Ukrainian city of Sievierodonetsk in what is being described as a “frenzied push.”

This city is key to Putin’s efforts to quickly complete the capture of the industrial Donbas region.

The city’s mayor says heavy street fighting continues and artillery bombardments threaten the lives of the estimated 13,000 civilians still sheltering in the ruined city.

In Washington meantime, it’s been decided by the Biden Administration that Ukraine will be sent a small number of high-tech, medium-range rocket systems, a critical weapon that Ukrainian leaders have been requesting.

U.S. State Department spokesperson Ned Price says allies of the U-S and Ukraine are trying to match the weapons provided to the needs on the ground.

“The nature of that partnership will shift as we provide our Ukrainian partners precisely what they need to be effective. We’ve already shifted, given the tactical realities on the battlefield…I am confident we will continue to be nimble as the battle moves forward,” Price explained.

The rocket systems are part of a new $700-million tranche of security assistance for Ukraine from the United States, and will give Ukrainian forces greater precision in targeting Russian assets inside Ukraine.
