It’s been announced by Canada Soccer that the international friendly match between Canada and Iran on June 5th in Vancouver has been cancelled.
The day before the announcement, Fight Back with Libby Znaimer invited a number of stakeholders to talk about the now cancelled upcoming match, which was seen as inappropriate and according to the Federal Conservatives “reprehensible” in light of the Iranian Canadian families who lost loved ones in a plane shot down by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard two years ago.
Ram Jubin is a lawyer for some of the families and told Fight Back there is unanimous agreement that because of the downed plane, this soccer match cannot go on.
“Experts all agree that there are elements of criminality involved, terrorism involved, against that flight that was downed. So at this time, when we’re talking about national security there’s really no excuse. It should be just a flat ‘no’ you cannot come here.”
The cancellation of the Canada Iran soccer match comes after a complaint was filed by the families to the National Security and Intelligence Review Agency.
