There is an official response from both China and Huawei to the news that two of China’s telecom giants are being banned from Canada’s 5-G, or next-generation mobile networks, based on security concerns.

A spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Canada has issued a statement saying the ban on Huawei and Z-T-E products and services has produced “strong dissatisfaction” and that Canada’s international image will definitely be damaged by the decision. The statement goes on to say Beijing will make a comprehensive and serious assessment of the move and take all necessary measures to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies.

“You can’t just stereotype companies and people from those countries when you have disputes with the government,” said Huawei Canada’s Vice President of Corporate Affairs Alykhan Velshi, “At the end of the day, it’s a political decision and we’re disappointed by the decision.”

The announcement was made Thursday by Canada’s Innovation Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne, who said the decision followed a full review by Canada’s security agencies, in consultation with Canada’s closest allies.

Champagne says the federal government will not compensate telecom companies that have already spent money on tech from these companies.
