The six contenders looking to win the leadership of the federal Conservatives held their first official debate in Edmonton Wednesday night, and all of them framed the country, and the party, as deeply divided.

Pierre Poilievre was the main target of the others. They accuse the long time Ottawa-area MP of driving disunity.

A big part of Poilievre’s pitch is about fighting Canada’s high inflation rate and he’s pledging to fire Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem because of it.

“The Bank of Canada governor has allowed himself to become the ATM machine of this (Liberal) government, and so I would replace him with a new governor who would reinstate our low inflation mandate, protect the purchasing power of our dollar and honour the working people who earn those dollars,” Poilievre explained.

In response, former Quebec premier Jean Charest said Poilievre’s remarks are irresponsible and sowed distrust in the system.

Haldimand-Norfolk MP Leslyn Lewis later said she doesn’t think members of parliament should be meddling in the central bank.

And Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown suggested Poilievre’s bombastic style would prevent the party from growing in suburbs and in the Greater Toronto Area.

Conservatives choose their next leader September 10th.
