TORONTO DESIGNER EARNS TONY NOMINATION

A Toronto-born production designer Peter Nigrini has been nominated for a Tony Award for the Broadway musical MJ.

It tells the story of legendary singer Michael Jackson and centres on the making of his 1992 Dangerous World Tour, featuring his music.

Nigrini is known for his work on 2016’s Dear Evan Hansen and he previously received nominations for his work on 2019 productions  Ain’t Too Proud  and  Beetlejuice.

A Strange Loop leads the pack with 11 nominations.

Michael R. Jackson’s story is about a Black gay man writing a show about a Black gay man.

Following closely behind were MJ and Paradise Square with 10 nominations each.

The nominations were announced early Monday morning.
