There are deep concerns that Russian Leader Vladimir Putin could announce on the Russian holiday of May 9th that he plans to annex much of eastern Ukraine later this month.

Michael Carpenter is U.S. ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. He says the U.S. believes the Kremlin also will recognize the southern city of Kherson as an independent republic. But Carpenter says the U.S. and its allies would not recognize either move.

At the same time, we’re learning from The British military it’s believed Vladimir Putin’s Russian military is now “significantly weaker” after suffering losses in the nearly 10 week old war in Ukraine.

In its daily war statement, the British Defense Ministry also says Russia’s recovery would be exacerbated by sanctions.

The ministry cites failures both in strategic planning and operational execution for Russia’s inability to “dominate Ukraine.”

In Mariupol meantime, the steel mill that has become the port city’s last stronghold of resistance has come under renewed assault after the first hundred of the 1000 civilians hold up there were allowed to leave safely on Sunday.
