MODELLING: ONTARIO'S 6TH WAVE MAY HAVE PEAKED, BUT UNCERTAINTY REMAINS HEADING INTO HOLIDAY WEEKEND

Wastewater data indicates COVID-19 transmission may have peaked however it’s not clear which way things are trending.
That’s according to the latest modelling of the Ontario COVID Science Advisory Table.
Its scientific director Dr Peter Juni, a frequent guest on Zoomer Radio’s ”Fight Back,” says it’s unclear if the apparent crest in the number of cases will be followed by a rise, fall or continued plateau after the holiday weekend.
The new modelling also says the sixth wave is driven by the new, more transmissible BA.2 subvariant, waning immunity and lifting of public health measures.
The panel of pandemic experts says modelling also suggests hospitalizations and ICU admissions will keep rising, but that it’s unlikely they’ll reach levels seen earlier during the previous wave.
Infections among health-care workers are as high as they were during the Omicron wave and combined with rising hospitalization numbers, the advisory table adds this could impact health system capacity.
But Health Minister Christine Elliott says the latest modelling on hospital and ICU occupancy shows the province can manage the current wave of infections without bringing back public health measures.
The province is reporting 60 more hospitalized with COVID for a total of 1,392.
There are five fewer in hospital ICUs for a total of 177.
Meanwhile, Doug Ford says he’d have ”no problem” extending the remaining mask mandates beyond April 27th, if that’s the recommendation from the chief medical officer.
Mask mandates remain for high-risk settings, such as hospitals, long-term care and public transit.
Dr. Kieran Moore has said he’s considering extending them.
