On the eve of a meeting where NATO leaders are likely to increase the number of troops in eastern Europe, the head of the alliance warned Russia not to use nuclear weapons.
”Russia must stop its nuclear sabre rattling,” stated Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, calling it dangerous and irresponsible.
”NATO’s there to protect and defend all allies and we convey a very clear message to Russia – that a nuclear war cannot be won and should never be fought.”
NATO’s expected to decide to set up new multi-national battlegroups in Hungary, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria.
That’s in addition to four existing units for a total of some 5,000 troops deployed to the three Baltic states and Poland after Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014.
In a show of Western unity, in addition to the NATO meeting Thursday, Brussels will also host a G-7 and European Union summit.
