Toronto’s former police chief has entered the provincial election campaign, running as the Tory candidate in Don Valley West, a riding held by Liberal Kathleen Wynne since 2003.
Mark Saunders retired from the Toronto Police Service in 2020 and last year, was appointed by the province as a special adviser on the redevelopment of Ontario Place.
Doug Ford issues a statement to say the 60-year-old Saunders brings an incredible amount of experience and he’s thrilled to have him as part of the team.
In a statement, Saunders says he has worked closely with Ford over the years and admires his strong leadership.
“I’m honoured to have been chosen by Doug Ford as the 2022 Ontario PC candidate for Don Valley West. Doug and I have worked closely over the years, and I’ve always admired his strong leadership and dedication to supporting Ontarians, especially over the last two years. This is a critical time in Ontario’s history as we recover from the impacts of the pandemic, and it is clear the Ontario PC Party has a strong plan to build a better future for our families and future generations to come, whether it’s investing in transit, building highways, strengthening our health care system, or supporting workers and cutting costs for Ontarians.”
Saunders served as Toronto’s police chief from 2015 until his resignation last summer. The first Black chief in the history of the force spent 38 years with the Service.
Kathleen Wynne is not running again, and the Liberals have nominated Stephanie Bowman to run in the riding.
