A Russian offer of safe passage out of the besieged strategic southern Ukrainian port city of Mariupol in exchange Ukrainians lay down their arms and waive white flags has been rejected.
The Russians had offered two corridors – one heading east toward Russia, another west to other parts of Ukraine
”There can be no talk of any surrender, laying down of arms,” says Deputy Prime Minister Irina Vereshchuk.
The mayor of Mariupol also rejected the offer soon after it was made, saying on Facebook he didn’t need to wait until the deadline to respond.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said he’d be ready to meet Vladimir Putin in person, but a Kremlin spokesperson says there needs to be more progress first.
”So far significant movement has not been achieved” in talks, according to Dmitry Peskov.
Meanwhile, Russia’s summoned American Ambassador John Sullivan to the foreign ministry to lodge an official protest over President Joe Biden calling his Russian counterpart a war criminal.
Moscow says relations with Washington are ”on the verge of a breach.”
