A remarkable discovery has been made during excavation at Notre Dame cathedral in Paris.

Several tombs and a sarcophagus likely dating from the 14th century have been uncovered, completely preserved.

Archeologists combing through the site following a devastating fire in 2019 say the coffin might have been made for “a senior dignitary” and likely dated from the 1300s — a full century after the cathedral’s construction.

In addition, elements of painted sculptures were found just beneath the current floor level of the cathedral.

Other parts of the structure, destroyed in the early 18th century, and unearthed later are already on display in the Louvre museum.

French President Emmanuel Macron vowed to rebuild the Cathedral within five years.

The historic fire shocked France, with residents and tourists watching in disbelief as the blaze sent the cathedral’s spire crashing down.
