There’s been a lot of talk in recent years of making Daylight Saving Time permanent in Ontario and do away with the twice-annual time changes.
Even though a bill was passed at Queen’s Park last year, things remain the same meaning we set clocks ahead an hour this weekend.
For the bill to pass, neighbouring New York state and Quebec need to be fully onboard.
In the United States, a special committee is looking into the negative health impacts of switching the clocks twice a year.
“Recent studies have found the transition causes cumulative sleep loss and may result in more heart attacks and mood disorders,” said Chairperson Jan Schakowsky. She adds the health impacts can be long term.
Those in favour of keeping Daylight Saving Time year-round say it saves money on energy, allows for greater economic activity, and reduces the number of deadly car accidents.
Those in favour of keeping Standard Time permanent say it will allow people to get better quality sleep.
