Canada and its NATO allies are focused on hitting Vladimir Putin hard with economic sanctions to try to force an end to the Russian war in Ukraine.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the military alliance is not going to establish a no-fly zone over Ukraine because that would mean the West would be responsible for policing the skies over Ukraine, which could result in direct combat between NATO and the Russians.
”The thing that we have so far avoided, and will continue to need to avoid, is put in a situation in which NATO forces are in direct conflict with Russian soldiers.  That would be a level of escalation that is unfortunate.  That we need to avoid,” adds Trudeau.
The prime minister also ruled out sending Canadian Armed Force jets to Ukraine, saying the military personnel there would not know how to use them.
”The Ukrainian military has trained up on Soviet-style MiGs and fighter jets that Canada simply does not have,” Trudeau points out.
He’s meeting with leaders in Europe next week to further discuss steps they can take.
Trudeau’s going to London, Berlin, Riga and Warsaw.
