World leaders are now focussed on a forceful reaction following yesterday’s move by Russian Leader Vladimir Putin to sign decrees recognizing the independence of two regions in eastern Ukraine and order the Russian military to “maintain peace” in the areas.

Germany’s chancellor has made the first big move, taking steps to stop the process of certifying a gas pipeline from Russia.

Other leaders including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Britain’s prime minister are indicating sanctions against Russia will be announced in short order.

“Any violation of Ukraine’s current territorial integrity will be seen as a violation by Russia of some founding principles of the U.N. and the rule of law as we practice it around the world right now,” Trudeau explained during a Monday news conference.

(The regions have seen clashes between Russian backed fighters and the Ukrainian army since Russia illegally annexed Crimea in 2014)

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has addressed his nation, advising calm.

Zelensky says his nation is unafraid and would cede nothing.

Members of the U.N. Security Council held a rare nighttime emergency meeting Monday at the request of Ukraine, the U.S. and other countries.

A statement from the White House says U.S. President Joe Biden agreed “in principle” to meet Putin but only if he refrains from launching an assault on Ukraine.
